Postpartum Philosophy Rooted in Traditional Wisdom

Pillars of postpartum nutrition:

Traditional postpartum diets are warm in temperature, full of warming spices & ingredients, easy to digest, and nutrient dense.

These elements are found cross-culturally, but we are primarily rooted in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine practices. As these traditional systems provide the widest scope and in-depth look into these pillars.

  • Warming in temperature and in nature- it is essential to keep the postpartum body warm and to stoke the “digestive fires” for easy digestion

  • Easy to digest-during the early postpartum time the body’s energy should be reserved for healing and supporting the shift into lactation. Supporting the digestive system with easy to digest meals is a way to support healing, proper detoxification, and lactation.

  • Nutrient Density- helps provide necessary minerals, vitamins, protein, and healthy fats. This helps ensure mothers have all that is needed for proper tissue repair, hormonal detoxification, restoration of the body’s reserves, and milk production.

Postpartum foods should:

  • Assist digestion, what is easy on Mother’s digestion is easy on Baby’s digestion.

  • Bring warmth to the womb, circulatory system, and digestive tract.

  • Re-establish beneficial flora in the gut microbiome.

  • Build blood and restore fluids after birth.

  • Aid the transition from gestation to lactation- providing ample galactagogues to help with breast milk production.

  • Support the elimination of excess hormones after pregnancy, especially estrogen.

  • Provide key nutrients for the healing of connective tissues.

  • Restore the energy reserves of the body.

Maternal Health=Societal Health

Mothers lay the foundations of the societal nervous system through their relationship with their babies. The first three years of life are fundamental in creating a healthy nervous system through co-regulation, neural synchronization, and healthy stress management. Here at kinfolk we want to help mothers focus on their babies and supporting families through this key period of development by alleviating stress, providing warmth and nourishment, and being a main line of resourcing for mothers.

Farm Fresh & Seasonally Appropriate

Unfortunately the modern food system often lacks nutrient density due to the poor soil quality of today’s farms. That is why we work with farmers who grow soil as well as food! We are committed to sourcing produce, meat, and bulk goods from ethical and local producers that guarantee our meals are full of the nourishment you need.

How can we contribute to a sustainable food system that builds a brighter future for the children of today? By eating seasonally appropriate produce and forging a land based menu that reflects the abundance that the West Coast and Coastal California has to offer.

A Non-toxic Lifestyle

We are committed to using ingredients that are organic and roundup free. No hidden harmful pesticides, insecticides, or added hormones. We also use remineralized reverse osmosis water in all of our recipes and drinks.

While preparing our meals we only use stainless steel, cast iron, & glass cookware. Absolutely no harmful PFAS around here! Each week our meals are delivered in glass jars & compostable containers—with the jars, boxes, and cool packs picked up on the next delivery to be sanitized and reused. This helps us limit waste and create a sustainable eco-friendly business.

Food is Fun (or at least is should be)

Easily digestible does not equate to bland. Food should be restorative and also fun. The Kinfolk Hearth table is brought to you by a crew of foodies who want to continuously center warmth, beauty, deliciousness, and excitement to the postpartum journey.

Each week our meal service is delivered in colorful reusable packaging, glass jars, and includes goodies meant to spark ritual and stoke the hearth of motherhood.

Interwoven Communities

Motherhood can be alienating. We live in a culture where we often feel connected in online spaces, but lacking sustainable relationships in real life. As a team of farmers, birth workers, mothers, and creators, we want to grow an interwoven community carefully tended to through mutual aid and regularly scheduled gatherings.

Allow us to form a kinship with you and your family~
